Roger Maris was an American professional baseball right fielder who played 12 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB). He is best known for setting a new MLB single-season home run record with 61 home runs in 1961.
Roger Eugene Maris was born in Hibbing, Minnesota on September 10, 1934. His father, who worked for the Great Northern Railroad, moved the family to North Dakota in 1942, where Roger and Rudy, his older brother by one-year, grew up.
Maris began his professional career with the Cleveland Indians in 1957. He was traded to the Kansas City Athletics in 1958 and then to the New York Yankees in December of that year. He played for the Yankees until 1966.
Maris was a seven-time All-Star and won three Gold Glove Awards. He won two American League Most Valuable Player awards and finished second in voting twice. Maris appeared in seven World Series, five of which were won by the Yankees.
Maris died of lymphatic cancer on December 14, 1985 at the age of 51.
